The High Desert Ledger is an independent regional journal on the American Southwest: its water, its land and maps, its weather and its seasons, and the working life of the small towns that hold the high desert. It is written for the person who lives in that country, the person who is moving into it, and the person who has a decision to make about a well, a road, a roof, a parcel or a working season.
This is not a guidebook and not a shop.
What an entry contains
Each entry takes exactly one question about this country. The answer comes first, in the opening paragraphs, before any background. What follows is written so a reader can jump to the part they need: how the thing is measured, what the sources record, what changes with the season, and where the limits sit.
The sources are named at the end of the entry. In this field the useful sources are the published maps and reports of the national and state agencies, the records of the county and the land office, the guidance of the extension services, and the printed regulations that govern water, land and building here. Where a source does not settle a question, the entry says so instead of guessing, and it never invents a local figure.
